Tennessee hiker carried off Mount Willard Trail after leg injury

Conservation officers and Twin Mountain firefighters carried a 57-year-old woman about 0.3 miles to a trailhead on Route 302 after she slipped off a rock, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Rescuers carried an injured hiker down the Mount Willard Trail in the White Mountains on Oct. 10 after she slipped off a rock and hurt her leg, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said Monday.

Raelynn Plattner, 57, of Joelton, Tennessee, fell at about 3:25 p.m. about 0.3 miles up the trail from the trailhead on Route 302, the department said. Her lower leg was seriously injured and she could not put weight on it, according to the department.

One of Plattner's daughters ran down the trail until she reached cell phone service and called for help, officials said.

Conservation officers from Fish and Game and members of the Twin Mountain Fire Department responded. They gave Plattner first aid in the woods and then carried her in a litter to the trailhead, arriving at about 5:20 p.m., the department said.

At the road, Plattner chose to be driven in a private car to Littleton Regional Hospital for treatment, according to the department.

Officials urged hikers to prepare for winter conditions in the White Mountains, saying nighttime temperatures have been consistently below freezing and the high peaks already have snow.
