Connecticut wildland fire crew returns from Minnesota after two-week deployment

A 10-person crew from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was due back at its Marlborough base Friday after helping fight the Bear Trap fire in northeastern Minnesota.

A 10-person Connecticut wildland firefighting crew was scheduled to return Friday from northeastern Minnesota, where it had been helping fight the Bear Trap fire, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said.

The crew left the department's Eastern District Headquarters in Marlborough on Aug. 11 and was expected back at the same site Friday between 4 and 4:30 p.m., according to the agency. A separate four-person engine crew returned to Connecticut on Aug. 22, and additional crew members were sent to Minnesota on Aug. 21 to replace them.

The firefighters are members of the Connecticut Interstate Fire Crew, which deploys out of state under the Northeastern Forest Fire Compact, a multi-state mutual aid agreement. The department said the crews are made up of full-time DEEP staff and trained "call-when-needed" wildland firefighters certified to national standards.

DEEP said the crew has sent 43 firefighters to wildfires in the United States and Canada in recent months. Those deployments included a 20-person crew to Oregon on July 10, a six-person crew to Quebec on July 15, and four separate crews to Minnesota, on July 27, Aug. 8, Aug. 11 and Aug. 21.

The agency invited reporters to its Marlborough headquarters as the returning firefighters checked out of the assignment.
