Vermont State Police cite South Barre driver over 95 mph run through I-89 work zone

Troopers said a 911 caller reported a blue Mustang swerving through construction cones on Interstate 89 in Bolton before a trooper stopped the car in Middlesex. Steven Diltz is due in court in Burlington in November.

A South Barre man has been cited on a charge of negligent driving after Vermont State Police said he drove more than 95 mph through a highway construction zone on Interstate 89.

State police said they got a report on Sept. 17 of a blue Cobra Mustang with a white racing stripe being driven erratically on the southbound side of the interstate in the work zone near mile marker 72 in Bolton. A 911 caller said the Mustang was traveling faster than 95 mph in the right lane, cut off another car and swerved through construction cones to pass, according to the release.

A trooper who was handling a crash at mile marker 70 saw the Mustang and stopped it at Exit 9 southbound in Middlesex, police said. The driver was identified as Steven Diltz of South Barre.

Police said Diltz was given a criminal citation to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court in Burlington on Nov. 10 to answer a charge of negligent driving. State police noted that court dates can change.

The charge is an allegation, and Diltz is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty.
