(The Center Square) — The social media company X has suspended an account for the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire after Gov. Kelly Ayotte called on the website to take it down over violent and racist posts.

The Libertarian Party of New Hampshire account, which drew widespread criticism last month after calling for the assassination of elected officials, has gone dark after it violated the company's Violent Content Policy which "explicitly prohibits threats to inflict physical harm on others, including threats to kill or seriously injure individuals."

The move comes after Ayotte issued a rare demand for the social media company to take down the account over its posts, citing a policy banning speech "inciting violence and expressing a desire for others to experience physical harm."

"This account has openly called for the assassination of elected officials from the New Hampshire Democratic Party, has said it condones murdering elected officials for their policy positions, and most recently threatened a member of House leadership," Ayotte wrote in a letter to X's head of security Michael O'Herlihy. Violent rhetoric is completely unacceptable and has no place in our civil discourse."

"These posts plainly violate X's own rules on violent content, and I'm calling on X to remove them and suspend the account immediately," Ayotte wrote.

The Libertarian Party of New Hampshire, which claims 10,000 members, isn't considered a major party and rarely runs candidates on the ballot. Kauffman ran unsuccessfully for a U.S. Senate seat in 2022, getting only 2% of the vote.

But the chapter has become a lightning rod for criticism over its incendiary social media posts, which have drawn national attention.

In September, the group drew by bipartisan criticism for calling for the assassination of New Hampshire Democrats in response to their policies on taxation and social issues.

"We openly support the assassination of basically every elected Democrat in New Hampshire," the Libertarian Party of NH said in a post on X. "If you want to light Democrats on fire, please do."

The post drew bipartisan criticism, and a sharp rebuke from the national Libertarian Party, which says it is not affiliated with the renegade. The national party recognizes a different faction, the Granite State Libertarian Party.

The group previously faced backlash for posts glorifying violence against top Democratic figures, including a 2024 post calling anyone who murdered Kamala Harris an "American hero" and other threats at state officials.
