(The Center Square) — Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is set to visit Maine on Thursday to stump for Democrat Troy Jackson, with the latest polls showing him locked in a tight U.S. Senate race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic New York representative and progressive darling, is expected to appear at a Portland "Students Versus Billionaires" rally with Jackson to help gin up support from the party's left wing ahead of the Nov. 3 elections.

Organizers of the town hall event, hosted by More Perfect University, said it will feature discussions on "the issues that are impacting us most, from skyrocketing rent and tuition to the erosion of free speech." The group said students will be able to ask direct questions of AOC and Jackson during the event.

Jackson, a former Maine Senate President and Allagash logger, replaced disgraced Democratic candidate Graham Platner as the party's nominee after he bowed out of the race amid sexual assault claims by former girlfriends.

Collins, a moderate, is the only Republican senator running for reelection this year in a Democratic-led state that Kamala Harris carried in the 2024 presidential election.

The latest polls have shown a tight race between the two candidates in a must-win contest for the Democratic Party as it pushes to retake the U.S. Senate, where Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority. Election handicappers Cook Political Report and Inside Elections have both rated the Maine Senate race a "Toss Up" ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms.

Democrats and Republicans have pumped tens of millions of dollars into a crush of TV and digital advertising into Maine to sway undecided voters ahead of the election.

On Wednesday, Collins held several campaign events with former Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who stressed her willingness to buck the Republican Party and urged the state's independent voters to back her for another term.

“She’s not a Trump senator, she’s not a Republican senator or a Democrat senator,” Manchin said in remarks at a hotdog stand in Lewiston on Wednesday. “She’s an American senator who represents her state of Maine.”

Ocasio-Cortez is seeking a fifth term representing New York's 14th Congressional District, is the latest progressive leader to visit the state to help shore up support for Jackson's bid to topple the veteran lawmaker. On Saturday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., joined Jackson and other Maine Democrats for a "No Kings" rally in Portland. Last week, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., campaigned with Jackson in Bangor, Lewiston and Biddeford.

But Ocasio-Cortez's Maine visit also comes amid increasing speculation the liberal firebrand could be seeking the Democratic Party's nomination to run for president in the 2028 elections, when the White House will be up for grabs.

The "squad" member and darling of the progressive movement has visited several swing states and recently traveled to Michigan to campaign for democratic socialist Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, and to Ohio, where she stumped for fellow Democratic Congresswoman Emilia Sykes.

On Wednesday, the Maine Republican Party held a press briefing to criticize AOC's "socialist stopover" visit to the state and sought to tie Jackson's platform to the Democratic Party's far-left agenda.

"AOC and her DSA policies are Troy Jackson’s closing argument to voters," MaineGOP chairman Jim Deyermond said. "AOC is on the ballot with Troy Jackson because he brought her to Maine. A New York socialist is what Troy Jackson wants Mainers to think of when we vote. AOC and Troy are extreme politicians. Reject their dangerous, expensive policies."
