Maine Democrat Jared Golden backs Lawler's re-election bid

(The Center Square) — Outgoing Democratic Maine Rep. Jared Golden is bucking his party, once again, to support New York Republican Congressman Mike Lawler's reelection bid.

In a statement, Golden called Lawler — a moderate GOP lawmaker facing a tough reelection fight in New York's 17th Congressional District — a "true partner" and urged Hudson Valley voters to re-elect him this fall.

"The Congress we get is the one we elect, and the country needs fewer members who treat the job as a stage and more who treat it as work. In New York's Hudson Valley this fall, that is the choice on the ballot," Golden said in a statement posted on social media Monday. "I strongly back him, and I hope voters send him back to work."

"Wherever you live, find the members who pass laws with the other party, and keep them," Golden added. "Maine's lobstermen can tell you how much it matters."

Golden, a four-term Democrat who represents Maine's right-leaning 2nd Congressional District, isn't seeking reelection next year. He has bucked Democratic leaders by voting with Republicans on measures to reopen the federal government and against a war powers resolution on Iran. More recently, he voted for a GOP measure to impose new sanctions on Russia over its war in Ukraine.

Lawler, who has bucked Trump and top Republicans over SALT taxes and other pocketbook issues, thanked Golden and praised him for a willingness to reach across the political aisle during his time in Congress.

"While we are from different parties and different states, Jared and I have worked during our time together in the House to find common ground on issues that matter both to us and our constituents," Lawler posted on X. "We share a firm belief that what's best for the people should come before one's party, and that if more members on both sides of the aisle took that approach more often, the country would be better off for it.

"Time and again when we needed bipartisan compromise, Jared was always there ready to deliver," Lawler added. "I’m honored to have earned his support."

In the upcoming midterms, Lawler is facing a close race from Democratic challenger Kaitlan Conley, a former White House counterterrorism official, who emerged from a crowded Democratic primary to win the party's nomination.

New York's 17th Congressional District is considered a key House battleground in the upcoming midterms, when control of Congress is out for grabs. The swing district has gone back and forth between Republican and Democratic representatives over the years. Democrat Kamala Harris won the district in the 2024 presidential election. The Cook Political Report has rated the 17th district a toss-up.

President Trump visited the congressional district — which includes parts of the Hudson Valley, including Rockland, Putnam, and parts of Westchester and Dutchess counties — in May to rally supporters for Lawler and other New York Republican candidates ahead of the November elections.
