Driver and passenger die when SUV runs off I-95 in Stratford

State police are investigating the single-vehicle crash near Exit 32, which shut part of the northbound highway and backed up traffic on local roads.

STRATFORD, Conn. — A driver and a passenger died on Saturday, Nov. 7, when their SUV swerved across every northbound lane of Interstate 95 in Stratford and struck a sign support and then a tree near Exit 32, according to police accounts reported by NBC Connecticut and News 12 Connecticut.

The Connecticut State Police are investigating, and the agency said it has not yet determined what caused the crash.

Police told both outlets that the Mazda CX-9 was the only vehicle involved. It was traveling in the left lane when it drifted across all three lanes and left the pavement, ending up in a grassy area, which News 12 said was by the exit ramp. The crash was reported at about 10:15 a.m., police said. News 12 identified the SUV as a 2019 model.

The two people inside were pronounced dead at the scene. NBC Connecticut identified them as Jeffrey Stein, 54, and Jessica Stein, 43, both of Brooklyn, N.Y. News 12 reported that their identities were not immediately known.

WFSB reported that the northbound side of the highway was shut between Exits 31 and 32 during the investigation. According to Patch, the closure pushed traffic onto local streets, clogging Stratford Avenue, Honeyspot Road, lower Main Street and Ferry Boulevard.

News 12 reported that the state police crash reconstruction squad was called in, and that Stratford firefighters, Stratford EMS and the state Department of Transportation also responded.

Trooper Daniel Sottini is leading the inquiry. State police asked witnesses or anyone else with information to email him at [email protected] or to call Troop G at 203-696-2500.
