Man, 40, killed in shooting behind Arch Street apartment building in Hartford

Witnesses described a car to police, and an officer stopped it a short distance away soon after. Outlets differ on whether the person inside has been arrested.

HARTFORD, Conn. — A 40-year-old man was shot and killed behind an apartment building on Arch Street, a short walk from Hartford City Hall, early Monday, Oct. 26, and an officer stopped a car tied to the shooting soon afterward, according to two Connecticut television stations.

Police are treating the death as a homicide and have not identified the man, WFSB and NBC Connecticut reported.

NBC Connecticut reported that dispatchers got numerous 911 calls, along with a ShotSpotter alert, shortly before 2 a.m. Officers found the man unresponsive, and the first one on scene gave him chest compressions before he was taken to a hospital, where police said he died, the station reported.

The two stations describe the cause somewhat differently. WFSB said police told it a large fight led to the gunfire, and investigators said several people saw the shooting. NBC Connecticut reported that police believe a disagreement behind the building set it off and that one of the people involved lives there.

Both stations reported that witnesses gave police a description of the car, and that an officer pulled it over near Charter Oak Avenue and Main Street.

"Charter Oak and Main is where the officer did a great job paying attention, listening to the radio and stuff, and stopped that vehicle," Lt. Aaron Boisvert of the Hartford Police Department told WFSB.

Accounts of what happened next differ. WFSB reported that a suspect is in custody, while NBC Connecticut said only that a person in the car was detained and was being questioned. Neither outlet has named anyone, and no charges have been reported. NBC Connecticut reported that police said the public is not in danger.

Police shut down Arch Street near The Capitol Grille, Carbone's and the Connecticut Convention Center, WFSB reported, and its crew saw investigators focusing on the apartment building.
