Fire at Belfast mobile home leaves one person and two dogs dead

State fire investigators believe the blaze on Back Searsport Road started on a rear porch that held a laundry area. The person who died has not been identified.

BELFAST, Maine — One person and two dogs died after fire tore through a mobile home on Back Searsport Road in Belfast on the afternoon of Oct. 30, according to the Bangor Daily News and WABI.

Both outlets reported that firefighters found the person dead inside the home. WABI cited the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office as its source for the death. Neither outlet named the victim or gave the person's age or sex.

Investigators believe the fire began on a back porch where a laundry area was set up, the outlets reported. What sparked it has not been determined.

The Belfast Fire Department took the call, and crews met heavy flames when they pulled up, both outlets reported. The Bangor Daily News attributed that account to Aaron Turcotte, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety. The two outlets gave slightly different times for the response: the Bangor Daily News said firefighters were sent at 2:38 p.m., while WABI put it at about 2:30 p.m.

Belfast firefighters called in the State Fire Marshal's Office, which dispatched a team to work out where and how the fire started, according to both reports.

The body was brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where officials will work to identify the person and establish a cause of death, the outlets reported.
