Man dies in Kennedy Drive blaze in Windsor; police do not suspect foul play

Firefighters responding to an early-morning call located the man in the basement. State fire investigators are working to determine how the fire started.

WINDSOR, Vt. — A man died after fire broke out at a house on Kennedy Drive in Windsor on Saturday morning, Nov. 7, and police do not suspect foul play, WCAX reported, citing the Windsor Police Department.

Crews were called to the home at about 8 a.m. amid early word that someone might still be inside, according to WCAX. NBC Boston placed the call shortly after 8, while Newport Dispatch reported that it came in at 8:05 a.m.

Firefighters searching the house located the man in the basement, and he was declared dead there, all three outlets reported. His name has not been released and will be withheld until his family is notified, the outlets said. None reported his age, how badly the house was damaged or whether anyone else was hurt.

The Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit was brought in to help pin down where and how the fire began, according to all three outlets. No cause had been announced, WCAX and NBC Boston reported.

Newport Dispatch was the only outlet to list the departments that sent firefighters: Windsor, West Windsor, Claremont, Hartford, Weathersfield and Cornish. WCAX said only that several crews responded. Newport Dispatch also alone reported that Windsor police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner carried out a preliminary investigation into the death.

The medical examiner's office will perform an autopsy on the man, NBC Boston and Newport Dispatch reported.
