Concord, N.H., man dies after pickup is hit by tractor-trailer on I-95 in Providence
The 39-year-old driver's truck first rear-ended another vehicle, according to State Police. No one else was hurt, and no one has been charged.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A 39-year-old man from Concord, New Hampshire, died after a tractor-trailer hit his pickup truck on Interstate 95 South in Providence on Friday morning, Nov. 6, Rhode Island State Police said, according to two news outlets.
The man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and died there, the Fall River Reporter and NBC 10 WJAR reported. Police have not released his name. The Fall River Reporter said troopers were holding it until his relatives had been told.
As both outlets described the preliminary police account, the chain of events started in the left lane, where the man's Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended another vehicle. That first collision sent the Silverado veering over into the middle lane and into the path of a tractor-trailer, and the big rig slammed into it.
Nobody in the other vehicle was hurt, and the tractor-trailer driver was also uninjured, according to State Police. No one has been cited or charged, both outlets reported.
Troopers headed to the highway shortly before 10 a.m. after getting 911 calls, the Fall River Reporter said. That outlet reported that State Police placed the crash near the Barbara Leonard Way overpass, while WJAR said it happened close to the Charles Street exit. State Police units that reconstruct collisions and enforce commercial vehicle rules are assisting, according to the Fall River Reporter.
A WJAR crew at the scene saw damage to both the pickup and the tractor-trailer. Several lanes were shut for more than an hour, the station reported, and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation said the wreck was cleared and the lanes reopened at about 11:30 a.m.
