Man, 51, dies after stabbing near the Meriden Green, police say

Marcus Mitchell sought help at a Pratt Street smoke shop after he was attacked and later died at a hospital. Police say a person of interest is in custody on unrelated charges.

MERIDEN, Conn. — Meriden police are investigating the death of a 51-year-old man as a homicide after he was stabbed near the Meriden Green on Oct. 23 and later died at a hospital, WFSB reported.

The man, Marcus Mitchell, went into a smoke shop on Pratt Street looking for help, according to the station. Officers were called to the shop about 6:50 p.m. after reports that an injured person had walked in. Police said the attack did not take place inside the business, WFSB reported; investigators believe it happened on Pratt Street, on or close to the green.

At first it was unclear how Mitchell had been hurt, but police later determined he had been stabbed, the station reported. He was taken to a hospital, which WFSB did not name, and died there.

Police said a person of interest is in custody but is being held on charges that have nothing to do with the stabbing, according to WFSB. No one has been reported charged in Mitchell's death, and the station did not identify the person in custody or say whether investigators consider that person a suspect. Police said the public is not in danger.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, friends of Mitchell, whom WFSB described as a father and grandfather, gathered to honor him and left flowers and candles.

"He was charismatic. I grew up with him. Everyone in their life changes but this is a sad situation. So we had to show him love. Put out flowers, give him love and these candles," a friend identified by the station only as Latasha told WFSB.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the stabbing to reach Detective Case by phone, 203-630-6296, or by email, [email protected], the station reported.

The details in this story come from WFSB's report alone and could not be independently confirmed with Meriden police.
