Westborough puts its police chief on leave after Shrewsbury officers respond to call
Town officials say they have started the process of bringing in an independent investigator but have not explained what happened.
WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — Westborough has put Police Chief Todd Minardi on administrative leave after officers from neighboring Shrewsbury responded to a call that involved him, according to The Shrewsbury Post and Boston 25 News.
Both outlets reported that the town has begun working to hire an independent investigator. Neither said that anyone has been hired yet or that an inquiry has started.
"After learning of the situation, the Town placed Chief Minardi on administrative leave and began taking steps to retain an outside investigator to look into the matter further," the town wrote in a statement on its official Facebook page, Boston 25 News reported.
The Shrewsbury Post reported that the call took place Oct. 23 and that the town put its statement online at 7:10 p.m. Oct. 24. Boston 25 News said only that the call came at night.
While Minardi is out, the deputy chief is overseeing daily operations of the department, the outlets reported. Boston 25 News identified the deputy chief as Steve Tompkins; the Post did not name him.
Why Shrewsbury officers were called, and what prompted the decision to sideline the chief, remain unexplained. The town described its review as active and offered no additional comment, the Post reported, while Boston 25 News said no further details were released.
Neither outlet reported any charges. Neither reported comment from Minardi or from the Shrewsbury Police Department.
