Nine taken to hospitals after sudden illnesses empty North Smithfield rehab hospital

Patients and workers reported nausea, dizziness and vomiting at the same time, and fire officials said the cause had not been found.

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Nine people were taken to hospitals after patients and workers at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island in North Smithfield began feeling sick at the same time on Thursday evening, Oct. 22, forcing the building to be evacuated, NBC 10 (WJAR) reported.

Fire officials told the station that crews had not yet found what made people ill. No official was named in the station's account.

The people who fell sick described nausea, dizziness, vomiting and flu-like symptoms, according to crews cited by WJAR. Officials said the first report that several people had become ill at once came in at about 7:30 p.m., the station reported.

Hazardous materials teams checked the building during the evacuation, WJAR reported.

The station described the nine people taken to nearby hospitals as those who had been evacuated. Its report did not say whether anyone else was inside, how many of the nine were patients and how many were employees, or what condition any of them were in. It also did not say where other patients were moved or whether the hospital had reopened.

Fire officials are investigating, according to WJAR. No statement from the North Smithfield Fire Department, the Rhode Island Department of Health or the hospital was available to The New England Signal, and every detail in this account comes from the station's reporting.
