Police look for SUV in death of driver struck on Route 15 in Woodbridge
Detectives say security video from near the Racebrook Road bridge led them to a possible suspect vehicle. Todd Atkins, 43, died after the Oct. 31 crash.
WOODBRIDGE, Conn. — Connecticut State Police are searching for a light-colored SUV after a driver was killed on Route 15 in Woodbridge when an object that apparently came off an overpass struck his vehicle early on Oct. 31, according to WFSB and Patch.
Todd Atkins, 43, was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he died, both outlets reported. Patch said he lived in Waterbury; WFSB reported that his family said he was born there.
Atkins' vehicle "may have been struck by an object that appears to have been dropped from the Route 114 (Racebrook Road) overpass over the southbound travel lanes of Route 15," state police said in a statement quoted by Patch. Citing police, Patch described it as a one-vehicle crash at about 5:30 a.m. Police have declined to confirm details about the object, Patch reported.
Detectives reviewing security camera video from around the bridge identified a possible suspect vehicle, and on Nov. 5 state police said it was a light-colored SUV, the outlets reported. WFSB said police would not release an image of the SUV, pointing to the open investigation. Only Patch reported that detectives are also trying to reach persons of interest. No arrest has been reported.
Some early accounts differ. WFSB's first report on Oct. 31 placed the call on the northbound side near Exit 46 and described the closure as in New Haven; it said responders found the driver unresponsive and began CPR. Police have described the object as dropped, while WFSB has also called it thrown.
In a Facebook post shared by his sister, Dana Pietruszkiewicz, on Nov. 4, the family wrote, "It appears that a projectile was thrown from the bridge," Patch reported. The family said the object broke through his windshield. "He died from blunt force trauma to his torso," the statement said. Police have not confirmed those details.
"Todd did nothing wrong except be in the wrong place at the wrong time," the family wrote. WFSB reported that relatives remembered him as an Eagle Scout who loved the outdoors.
Racebrook Road and part of Route 15 stayed closed for hours, WFSB reported. Susan Brocklehurst, who lives on Racebrook Road, told WFSB, "I mean it's just horrible."
Detective Adrian Holmes wants to hear from anyone with dash camera footage or other information from near the overpass around 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 31, state police said. He can be reached at 203-393-4200 or [email protected].
