Man, 19, dies after stabbing behind a Coventry house
Police identified the victim as Nicholas Bennett and said they see no danger to the public. No arrest or charge has been reported.
COVENTRY, R.I. — A 19-year-old man died after he was stabbed behind a house in Coventry on the night of Oct. 26, and police say they believe the public is not at risk.
Police identified him as Nicholas Bennett, according to the Warwick Post and the Fall River Reporter. Both outlets reported on a statement from the Coventry Police Department, and neither reported an arrest, a suspect or any charges.
Officers were sent to a home on Anthony Street after a caller said a man may have been stabbed in the back of the property. The Warwick Post put the call at 10:18 p.m., while the Fall River Reporter said it came in shortly after 10:15 p.m.
Officers found Bennett and began CPR before Coventry Fire/Rescue crews took over, the outlets reported. He was taken to what police called Kent County Hospital, where he died despite efforts by officers, rescuers and hospital staff to save him.
Coventry detectives are working the case with the Rhode Island attorney general's office and the state medical examiner's office, police said, according to both outlets. The department also offered its condolences to Bennett's family.
An online fundraiser for the family describes Bennett as caring and brave and says he was stabbed while protecting a friend, the Fall River Reporter reported. That account comes from the fundraiser, not from police. "He was a beautiful person inside and out," the fundraiser's organizers wrote, according to the Fall River Reporter.
