Pickup flips on I-395 in Norwich, killing its driver
State police said the truck left the northbound side of the highway after midnight, struck signposts and light poles, then overturned. The driver was pronounced dead at a hospital.
NORWICH, Conn. — A pickup driver was killed early Saturday, Nov. 7, when the truck left Interstate 395 in Norwich, struck roadside signposts and light poles and flipped onto its roof, state police said, according to WFSB and NBC Connecticut.
Troopers were called at about 12:48 a.m. to the northbound side of the highway, close to the overpass by Maplewood Cemetery, both outlets reported.
Preliminary findings from state police indicate the truck drifted off the travel lanes and onto the right shoulder. There it struck two light poles and a number of signposts before overturning, police said. WFSB reported that the pickup came to rest upside down, blocking the right lane and the shoulder, a detail NBC Connecticut did not include.
Emergency crews found the driver unresponsive in the truck, police said. The driver was brought to a hospital in the area and declared dead.
Police said relatives of the driver had been notified. WFSB reported that the driver's name had not been released, and neither outlet gave the driver's age or hometown.
According to WFSB, state police described the wreck as a single-vehicle crash. Neither outlet reported that anyone else was involved, and neither said whether the highway was closed or what caused the truck to leave the road.
