Meriden and Waterbury men die in Cheshire crash on Waterbury Road

Police said the driver and his passenger were in a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro that struck a tree late Nov. 1. Both were pronounced dead at a Waterbury hospital.

CHESHIRE, Conn. — Two men died after the 1978 Chevrolet Camaro they were riding in struck a tree on Waterbury Road in Cheshire late on Nov. 1, police said, according to WFSB.

Police identified the driver as James Zabel, 43, of Meriden. His passenger was John D'Aniello, 42, of Waterbury, the station reported.

Cheshire police and firefighters were called to the scene at about 10:45 p.m., according to WFSB. Rescuers pulled both men from the car, and they were taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, where they were pronounced dead.

Police said the two men were in the same car. They have not said what caused it to leave the road and hit the tree, and they said Monday morning that the crash was still being investigated.

Police asked anyone who has information about the crash to call the Cheshire Police Department at 203-271-5544.
