Police detain several people after fatal shooting on Bridgeport's East Side
Bernard Fludd, 38, died at a hospital after he was found with a gunshot wound on Mill Hill Avenue. Police count it as the city's ninth homicide of 2026.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A 38-year-old man was shot and killed on the evening of Nov. 2 on Bridgeport's East Side, and police detained several people as they investigate what they count as the city's ninth homicide of 2026.
Police identified the man as Bernard Fludd, according to WFSB, NBC Connecticut and Patch. Patch reported that he lived in Bridgeport, one block from where he was shot. No other outlet reviewed reported where he lived.
Officers found Fludd lying on Mill Hill Avenue close to where it meets Barnum Avenue. "He was unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound," said Det. Jeffrey A. Holtz, who spoke for the Bridgeport Police Department, according to WFSB. Fludd was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where he died, NBC Connecticut and Patch reported.
Police were alerted by ShotSpotter, a system that detects gunfire, which picked up a single shot on Barnum Avenue. The outlets differ on timing: Patch put the alert at about 7:34 p.m., NBC Connecticut said it came around 7:30 p.m., and WFSB reported that 7:34 p.m. was about when Fludd was found. A person who called 911 from Mill Hill Avenue also reported hearing the shot.
After the gunfire, police watched several people hurry into a Mill Hill Avenue home and detained them, the three outlets reported. Detectives served a search warrant at that home early on Tuesday, Nov. 3, according to NBC Connecticut and Patch. Police have not said whether any of those detained will be charged.
The area was closed for several hours that night, WFSB and Patch reported. Patch said Mill Hill Avenue was shut near Grant Street while the department's Major Crimes Unit processed the scene.
Police asked people with information about the shooting to contact Detective Thomas Harper at 203-581-5239.
